The Tigers scouted Santana for nearly three years. One evaluator believes he has the natural ability to become an impact hitter once he grows into his body frame. MLB Pipeline’s scouting report compared him to Jhonny Peralta, who played four seasons in Detroit during a 15-year Major League career. He has above-average bat speed with an advanced approach and raw power that should improve with maturity. He’s a steady if not flashy defender with quick feet and an average arm. He has the quickness and speed to be a plus runner.
Like slugging outfielder Roberto Campos, Santana faces a long path to reach the big leagues. Also like Campos, his upside sets him apart from others at this point in the system. His bat skills should allow him to chew up lower-level pitching once he gets more experience.
