8/5/22 TTM Success--Tim Norrid--MLB

Tim signed our 1979 Topps - [Base] #705

Tim Norrid played in the Cleveland Indians minor league organization from 1975 to 1983 after being signed as an amateur free agent, spending six full seasons and part of another one at AAA, but never getting to appear in the major leagues. His major drawback was that he lacked a true position, as he spent time at third base, first base, in the outfield and at catcher, in addition to being a designated hitter. He was a good hitter, hitting .264 in 1070 games, but did not have outstanding power: he only twice hit more than 10 homers, with a personal best of 13, and also never hit more than 22 doubles.

Norrid's best season was in 1977, when he hit .283/.385/.444 as an outfielder with the Jersey City Indians of the AA Eastern League. He had previously played in AAA for 39 games with the Toledo Mud Hens the previous season, then starting in 1978 he played exclusively in AAA, one season with the Portland Beavers in 1978, two with the Tacoma Tugs/Tacoma Tigers in 1979 and 1980, and three full seasons with the Charleston Charlies from 1981 to 1983. In all of those seasons, he played over 100 games. His highest batting average was in his penultimate season, .299 for Charleston in 1982, and the most RBIs was 84 with the same team the following season.

Although Tim never played in the majors, he did appear on the "Indians Top Prospects" card issued by Topps in its 1979 set, alongside SS Alfredo Griffin and 2B Dave Oliver. Griffin would go on to share the 1979 American League Rookie of the Year Award with John Castino of the Minnesota Twins after being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, but Oliver, who had had a cup of coffee with the Indians in 1977, did not play in the Show again either.
